Bousfield Primary School

Bousfield Primary School was built in 1954 by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, who afterwards went on to design The Barbican in London. Some of the detailing used later in The Barbican, was developed first in the design and construction of the school.

The project was a sunken concrete and stone amphitheatre which was a shaded cold hard space little used by the school. The brief was to transform the space into a welcoming playable space.

The stone floor was taken up (to be re-used elsewhere in the school) and replaced with a soft rubber surface which playfully mirrored the elevation of the building. Timber decking was installed around part of the concrete terraces to provide more comfortable areas to sit and play.

I was the project lead from inception through to completion on site.
