Nags Head Estate
The housing estate built in 1933 by the Nags Head Housing Society and bought by the Peabody Trust in 1956. The land before was a pig farm belonging to a Navy Admiral, which explains the naming of adjacent streets Horatio Street, Cadell Close and Shipton Street.
The brief was to remove vehicle parking from the central courtyard and create a tranquil relaxing sociable space for use by the residents, and by the adjacent Sundial Centre that provides sheltered accommodation and a day care centre for the elderly.
In keeping with the history I designed the central courtyard in a maritime theme, with the cut out shape of a boat forming a seating area within grass waves, and low walls, similar to groins found on beaches, defining semi-private spaces outside flat entrances.
I was the project lead from inception to gaining planning approval and production of the tender package when the project was put on hold by the client.
